Professor Calvin DeWitt - Evangelicals and The Environment

Professor Dewitt dwells comfortably, even passionately, in two worlds that many see as inconsistent. Cal is a Professor of Environmental Studies, teaching Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of the Gaylord Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies. I speaks - and acts - on the Evangelicals & the Environmental, and on the spiritual journey of John Muir.

He was one of the lead organizers for National Association of Evangelicals & the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School.

The conference produced An Urgent Call To Action in the hope of focusing our attention and efforts on care for creation.

Cal is a member of Geneva Campus Church, a Christian Reformed Church.

The TWO Books
Cal was raised with the belief that there are TWO great books from which to learn, The Bible, and what he calls "The Book of Creation" - that is, the physical world which God has created. As a scientist his job is to study The Book of Creation.
Center for Health and Global Environment
He talks about the organizations he is working with. they are bringing evangelicals and scientists together to care for the world/cosmos/creation/existance. We need to get things put back together again.
Creationists
they are the whitened sepletures. They cling to the letter of the law and ignore the spirit. what question would be asked about the creation at the last judgement, what do you think of it, what did you do with it, but not how did I do it.
Fundamentalists
People who only care about their narrow view of religion. There are atheists that care about the world and fundamentalists that don't care a bit about it. He considers the Bible a very green book.
Serving the garden
A different view of dominion. dominion isnt the most oppressive word, the most oppressive word is translated subdue. also talks about the sun and moon in genesis being the names of gods. Do not destroy but serve.
How old is the world?
As old as is necessary to get where we are. he holds both views simultaneously. It is more important to care about the world than to know how it was created.
