Friendship Across Race & Difference: Rebecca Meets De'Andrea

Christine Platt and Catherine Wigginton Greene

Christine Platt and Catherine Wigginton Greene are exploring the potentials and pitfalls of interracial friendships, and, really, all friendships with “the other”. Their book is Rebecca, Not Becky, and it's about the interplay around a black woman in a very white Virginia town. Christine Platt has degrees in African and African American Studies, in addition to her JD in general law, and has written a number of books, many for youth, springing from her experience as a black woman. This is Catherine Wigginton Greene's first book, springing from her deep exploration of race, including her documentary, I'm Not Racist ….. Am I? and the workshops related to it, informed by her experience as a white woman. Together they provide a story encompassing many of the fears, hopes, struggles, and achievements of having a friendship across differences.
